Because sexual addition can result in a variety of negative consequences, it is vital to seek immediate treatment as soon as possible before one experience the deleterious effects caused by their sexual behavior. Some of the negative consequences that can be attributed to sexual addiction include the following:

  • Neglect and lying to family and partner that can end a meaningful relationship
  • Risk of developing mental health conditions such as extreme anxiety, stress and depression.
  • Financial debt to finance their sexual activities
  • Health risk such as contracting hepatitis, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases
  • Arrest for sexual offenses such as solicitation of prostitution and exhibitionism
  • Risk of losing jobs
  • Unwanted pregnancy
  • Risk of alcohol and drug abuse
  • Guilt and shame

Although there is no way to possibly detect the risk of developing sexual addiction for preventive treatment, the early treatment of any underlying brain abnormalities that can lead to sexual addiction should be able to reduce the risk of developing the compulsive behaviors. Because some sex addicts have a history of different types of abuse, caring of the child may be able to help them grow with stable emotional and mental fitness that can prevent the development of any kind of mental illness. Those who are under treatment for sexual addiction should comply with their treatment plan and to learn how to avoid risky situations. Self education is also important on how to learn proper coping mechanisms. Sexual compulsiveness can be treated effectively with a psychotherapeutic approach and medication when needed. Support from the family is a vital factor that can contribute to the wellness and recovery of a sex addict.
