  • The prevalence of hypochondriasis in the United States in the primary care industry is placed at 0.8% - 4.5%.
  • Some level of preoccupation with diseases is common in 10-20% of healthy people and 45% of those who have no major psychiatric disorder.
  • The prognosis of hypochondriasis is good among people belonging to a high socioeconomic status. People who respond well to anxiety and depression treatments, and those with no personality disorder and non-psychiatric medical illness.
  • In one general medical outpatient clinic, 88% of hypochondriacs had experienced more than one psychiatric disorder. Likewise, hypochondriasis is commonly co-morbid with substance abuse or dependence, particularly benzodiazepines.
  • Among the two sexes, hypochondriasis shows equal prevalence in both men and women.
