What Kinds of Drug Addiction Treatments are Available?

The treatment for drug abuse involves a series of steps that are initiated from the gradual withdrawal of drugs use. The withdrawal of drug use is a means to detoxify the body from being dependent on the drug, and the drug rehabilitation program is also followed by support treatment such as counseling, support group, and behavioral therapy that aim to help the drug addict learn to resist their inclination to drug addiction and develop a coping mechanism.

Detox Treatment/Withdrawal Treatment

This involves detoxifying the body system from too much dependency from a particular drug. There are a variety of detox programs against drug addiction. This involves the psychological withdrawal from the drug, which an addict has become dependent with. This include cocaine detox, alcohol detox, heroine and opioid detox, marijuana detox, ecstacy and club drug detox and crystal meth detox treatment programs.

There are common psychological withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, cravings, and depression that occur upon subjecting an addict to a withdrawal or detox treatment. 6

Drug Rehabilitation Treatment

The drug rehab treatment program for drug addiction encompasses several areas of treatment that include the detoxifying treatment or withdrawal therapy, which may be either on an in-patient or out-patient basis. Drug rehabilitation has its own distinct treatment approach within their facility in helping addicts to overcome drug abuse. 7

Counseling

Counseling usually involves individual and family counseling with a psychiatrist or psychologist and addiction counselor as a way to follow up the desired positive recovery from drug addiction after the treatment program in drug rehab. This teaches the patient to learn how to overcome their inclination for substance abuse and to help them learn coping mechanisms to resist the temptation to give in to their drug cravings. It also helps them avoid relapse and learn how to develop the right attitudes in improving their behaviors. Family members are also included in the counseling to make them better understand the condition of a drug addict and make them more aware of the kind of support they can lend to the full recovery of the drug addict.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that drug abuse is a treatable condition which requires a good recovery plan including physical rehabilitation, detoxification from the drugs, regular exercise, nutritional diet, and bed rest. 8 Psychological and behavioral changes are also helpful through counseling to avoid relapse and re-occurrence of drug dependency.

Drug treatment for drug addiction usually includes prescribed medications that will substitute the drug, which has a similar physiological effect, such as methadone as a substitute for heroin addiction and nicotine chewing gum for tobacco dependence. 9 The substitute drugs can help block the physiological effects and can help treat the symptoms caused by the abused drugs.

Drug Addiction Prevention

Because the most common cause of drug dependency is the inability of a person to cope with the various stressors in life, it is important that the first step towards drug addiction prevention is not to take a drug at all. Doctors will prescribe drugs that are meant to provide relief from anxiety, irritation, or depression in safe doses, and one’s drug intake should always be within this safe dose and not more than what is prescribed by health professionals.

Parents should also be aware to educate their children about drug and alcohol addiction and its deleterious effects. They should also learn to listen to their children when talking about peer pressure and set a good example to their children. Parents should work on creating a tight bond with their children that will provide teenagers a safe place to come to in times of difficulties and stress.

According to L. Ron Hubbard, an addict is found not wanting to become an addict, but they are only driven by environmental hopelessness and pain that they become inclined to depend on drugs for comfort. Once an addict becomes healthier mentally, physically, and psychologically without drugs he ceases to require the drugs. 10 This simply implies that drug addiction can be prevented once the individual is able to develop better self-reliance to cope in a stressful environment instead of looking at drugs as the solution to their problems.
