POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS FOR BODY IMAGE DISTORTION IN BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER

Brain and psychological studies on people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder have found that most of them use their left brain more in processing visual information than normal people. It indicates that their brain processing focuses on the small details, suggesting difficulty in seeing the whole picture. Researchers also found that when people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder were presented with visual images of faces, this triggered the activation of their amygdala (part of the brain linked to strong emotions, such as aggression). These studies indicate that people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder may have visual-processing abnormalities. 9
