What Kinds of Anxiety Disorder NOS Treatments are Available?

The main treatment programs involved with Anxiety Disorder NOS are the combination of psychotherapeutic and pharmacotherapy approaches. 7

  • Desensitization
    • This involves a procedure where the events causing the anxiety are recalled in the mind and a relaxation technique is applied in order to dissipate the anxiety. Sufficient repetition through practice will remove the anxiety invoking power of those events.
  • Adlerian Therapy
    • The goal of this form of therapy is to encourage the anxious person to learn to set goals that will allow them to overcome their anxiety; such as changes in their lifestyles.
  • Behavioral Therapy
    • In this form of therapy, reinforcement is applied to teach normal behavior because abnormal behavior is a direct result of defective learning. Learning theory is applied in the treatment program where the following are applied: desensitization, cognitive restructuring, behavioral rehearsal, assertion, modeling, relaxation method, new social skills and self management.
  • Existential Therapy
    • This will help the patient recognize that they are responsible for the events in their life — that they have the power to make good choices and to determine how they deal with life.
  • Gestalt Therapy
    • The patient is helped to become aware of their personal responsibilities, learn how to avoid problems and to experience things in a positive light.
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy
    • This helps the patient resolve their unconscious conflicts. They are made aware of these conflicts and learn how to resolve them.
  • Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
    • Because anxiety results from irrational fear, the rational emotive approach will help the patient to resolve conflicts rationally as well as correcti their belief system from childhood. This form of therapy will also help them deal with emotional and behavioral problems.
