How is Anorexia Nervosa Diagnosed?
In order to diagnose anorexia nervosa, it is important to rule out other possible explanations of extreme weight loss. Among them are general medical conditions (e.g. cancer, metabolic problems, etc.), other mental disorders, and poor nutrition (e.g. from poverty or poor eating habits).
For a positive diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, the following factors 4 have to be met:
Refusal to maintain a body weight above the minimum normal standards for one’s age and height (body weight is only 85% or below the minimum normal standard)
Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight
Disturbance in the way one’s body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on one’s self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of current low body weight
Applicable only to females: In women who have had their menstrual period, amenorrhea (i.e. absence of three consecutive menstrual cycles).
Specific types of anorexia nervosa are classified according to the preferred unhealthy method of controlling body weight: Restricting type (severe limiting of food intake, has not engaged in binge-eating and purging behaviors) and Binge-eating/Purging type (has engaged in binge-eating and purging behaviors—such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, etc.)
